Tom Yum Goong is familiar to many from Thai restaurant menus. It is also a staple meal in most Thai homes.

Classic Tom yum soup is clear broth Tom yum goong nam sai (ต้มยำกุ้งน้ำใส) . And the most popular tom yum base is river shrimp called Tom yum goong but families have also their variants, often includes meats such as chicken, beef, pork, fresh tomatoes, sweet white onions.

A creamy Tom yum nam khon (ต้มยำกุ้งน้ำข้น) is a variety with coconut milk or evaporated milk has become very popular in Thailand in the past several years.

The taste of Tom yum is based on sour and spicy flavors. A commercial Tom yum paste called Nam prik pao is prepared a base of the soup, to which water, herbs and meat, shrimp, prawn are added, very easily to cook the soup. The paste is bottled or packaged and sold around the world.

Tom Yum Goong is a soup that usually to be eaten with a variety of other Thai dishes. It's not normally eaten as an individual bowl of soup, the way it would be in Western way taken meal (luncheon or dinner).
