Garnachas
Garnaches are a popular street food in Belize made by frying a corn tortilla and topping it with refried beans, pickled carrots, hard cheese, lettuce, chopped onions, habanero pepper and tomatoes. This recipe is so easy to make.
Not to be confused with a Guatemalan Garnacha, a Belizean Garnache is a flat, fried corn tortilla topped with refried beans, chopped cabbage, tomato mix or picked onion, and cheese. Basically both are very similar, and are like Mexican nachos.
Among the first things visitors to Belize come to quickly realize is that there are no fasst food franchise restaurants in the country. Belize has no Kentucky Fried Chicken or McDonalds but Garnachas appear always on menu of Belizean fast food joints.
